After last weeks defeat to Wetheriggs, Celtic needed to get back to winning ways. Celtic took advantage of the light breeze and the slope in the first half.

Straight  away Celtic took the game to Dent and had their first goal scoring chance after only three minutes. A deep cross from Ashburn found Baker, whose header went narrowly wide.

Only two minutes later and Celtic were awarded an in-direct free kick, when Mitchell in the Dent goal was adjudged to have kicked the ball from his hands whilst outside the penalty area. Downey touched the ball to Baker, whose shot was too hot foe Mitchell to keep hold of, but his parry bounced over Simpson who was following in and was hooked to safety.

Celtic went on the attack again, good link up play between Cotton and Baker. Cotton crossed to the back post to find Collins, who some how managed only to put the ball back across the face of goal from one yard out when it must have been easier to score!

Baker is sent clear of the Dent defence, but is forced wide, his cross is met by Simpson for a simple tap-in, but a Dent defender managed to clear the ball off the line.

Only ten minutes gone and Celtic should have been four goals up. Although frustrated Celtic managed to keep playing football. After sixteen minutes Celtic finally got the breakthrough they deserved. Great play between Baker and Simpson. Baker peeled away to meet Simpson’s perfect cross to head home.

Celtic doubled their lead before half time. Cotton won the ball in midfield and fed the ball to Baker whose shot beat Mitchell.

2-0 at half-time, the first half was totally dominated by Celtic. The half time talk is all about keeping a clean sheet, playing quick passing football and the goals will come.

Only three minutes into the second half and Celtic fell asleep and gave Dent a lifeline. Along throw by Sowerby into Celtic’s six-yard area found Farrell who headed home.

Celtic reacted well though, a long ball through to Baker and he slotted home for his hat-trick, to make the score 3-1.

Celtics quick response knocked the wind out of Dent’s sails. Ashburn found Baker, a Dent defender challenged for the ball, but the clearance fell to Holding who made no doubt and scored his first goal for the first team to make the score 4-1.

Wicks sent forward a long ball which was flicked on by Baker into the path of Collins, who some how miraculously managed a to put the ball wide. (a miss worse than the one in the first half, I know the lad supports Newcastle , but leave your problems at home)

Another long clearance by Wicks, Baker challenges the keeper. The ball fell to Collins who finally hit the target and slotted home. 5-1.

Although the game is lost Dent keep battling, with Celtic pressed forward Dent capitalised. A good move down Dent’s left wing saw Sowerby shoot past Wicks to make the score 5-2.

Atkinson finished off the scoring for Celtic. Atkinson bravely challenged for the ball with Mitchell, the ball broke free and Atkinson rounded off the score at 6-2.

A good result for Celtic in a game they totally dominated. Frustrating that they didn’t score more and conceded two goals, that been said though some superb football was played. Downey controlled the game and when Holding and Cotton picked up the pace Dent could not handle them. Despite the mickey taking Collins had a great game. Reading this report I don’t think there is any doubt that Baker was man of the match, scoring three goals, setting up two and involved in every attack that Celtic had.

A couple of weeks break from the league now as Celtic turn their attention to cup duties and test themselves against first division opposition.

Celtics first away game of the season …..and yes its at Penrith ! Opponents Wetheriggs have seen some changes since the end of last season, with a new management team and a number of new players. Never the less, Wetheriggs teams are always well organised and you know you are in for a tough game.

Again Celtic put out an attacking side, but it soon comes apparent that the main players in the game are the goalkeepers. Not for their shot stopping though, but for their long kicks, quickly turning defence into attack. With midfield being by-passed.In a game with very little football being played, both teams make little impact on goal.

The first good chance came when Baker ran onto a long ball from Wicksand raced clear of the Wetheriggs defence. Baker lofted the ball over Wills in the Wetheriggs goal but the ball went narrowly wide.

Last minutes of the first half and Wetheriggs were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area. Theole stepped up and cleverly knocked the ball to Davis , but he fluffed his shot and the teams went in at half-time goaless.

Celtic probably edged the first half, but need to turn their chances into goals while keeping their concentration at the back to deal with the long balls thrown at them from Wills. Finally 15 minutes into the second half and some neat football sees Celtic take the lead. Holding plays a great ball to Wronski, who finds Baker to slot home.

Two minutes later and Celtic should have extended their lead. Again Wronski is the provider as he sends Baker clear, but his shot is wide.

From the resulting goal kick the ball was flicked onto Renwick who shot past Wicks to put Wetheriggs level.

Celtic still create the better chances, but yet again they cannot deal with a long ball from Wills. A mix up between Martindale and Pattinson sees the ball fall to Davis who fired the ball past Wicks off the underside of the crossbar, to put Wetheriggs 2-1 up.

Celtic pile forward to try and rescue something from the game, but the Wetheriggs goal leads a charmed life. Collins had two good goal scoring chances but cannot convert them, along with numerous other chances for various players.

Full-time and Celtic suffer their first defeat of the season and only their second defeat in their last 15 league games. Celtic were undoubtedly the better team on the day. But the story of the game was Wetheriggs took their chances and Celtic didn’t. Result Wetheriggs 2 Celtic 1.

The first ever meeting between Kendal Celtic and Ibis senior teams.

In what must be a first; a local Kendal derby having to be played 25 miles away in Penrith, due to the plight of the Jubilee Playing Fields.

Ibis started well putting Wicks in the Celtic goal under early pressure, but Celtic soon settled down and came close to making the breakthrough after thirteen minutes. Ashburn’s deep cross was met by Baker, whose strong header crashed against the Ibis crossbar and then scrambled away for a corner. From the resulting corner, Wronski’s accuracy found Downey unmarked, but Downey headed wide.

Both sides battled hard with most of the play locked in a midfield stalemate with goal scoring chances few and far between.

With half time beckoning Celtic took the lead. Cotton broke from midfield, knocked the ball into the Ibis penalty area and was brought down by Carradus. Referee Holder had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Wronski stepped forward and coolly slotted the ball into the left hand corner, giving Denney in the Ibis goal no chance.

Half time and 1-0 to Celtic.

To try and get back into the game Ibis changed formation for the second half, but this had little affect as Celtic took control of the game.

A long pass from Ashburn found Wronski, who crossed the ball to the back post. Baker rose above the defence and headed Celtic into a two goal lead.

Ibis pressed hard, throwing men forward to try and get back into the game. But paid the price when from an Ibis corner, Wicks plucked the ball out of the air, quickly fired the ball forward for Baker to run onto and put the ball past Denney to make it three nil to Celtic.

Mills came on for Downey and made an immediate impact playing a slide rule pass into the path of Baker, who slotted home to complete his hat-rick. Putting Celtic 4-0 up.

Still Ibis pressed forward but could not make any impact on the Celtic goal, Pattinson and Martindale soaked up any Ibis attacks. Time after time Celtic counter attacked and Ibis had Denney to thank for keeping the score down, making several excellent saves.

Finally Ibis pressure paid off, a cross from the right wing was met at the back post by Knowles, who headed past Wicks to make it 4-1.

This spurred Ibis on and they managed to score a second. A corner from the right found Hardiker unmarked and he headed home.

Unfortunately for Ibis it proved to be too little too late, Holder blew for full time and Celtic take the bragging rites with an impressive 4-2 victory.

Overall a very good all-round team performance. Keeping a good shape, looking like a formidable team. Within the team performance everyone contributed, with some excellent individual performances.

Man of the match would have to go to Baker, a hat-trick and looked dangerous every time he got the ball.

30/08/08

Kendal Celtic V Kirkoswold

After winning last weeks opening match Celtic come up against a strong Kirkoswold side.

Only 4 minutes in and Kirkoswold have the first clear sight of goal, the ball breaks to Tuer, but he cant beat Wicks, who makes a great save from close range.

Almost immediately Celtic are on the attack, the ball falls to Cotton on the half way line, he feeds the ball to Brewer who fires the ball across the Kirkoswold goal for Baker to tap in for his first goal of the season. 1-0 to Celtic.

Kirkoswold from this point come at Celtic, who struggle to cope with Kirkoswolds mobility and quick pass and move game. Time after time Celtic ride their luck and the Celtic goal leads a charmed life.

Celtic hold out and go in at half time leading 1-0.

The second half and Celtic settle down and take control of the game with Baker and Brewer looking threatening firing in long range shots at the Kirkoswold goal.

Half way through the second half Holding has to come off feeling unwell, Celtic reorganise with Burrows coming on to play on the right, Wronski moving upfront and Baker dropping into midfield.

The unusual sight of the keeper handling the ball in the area gives Celtic an indirect free kick inside the Kirkoswold penalty area. The ball is tapped to Brewer whose shot is destined for the corner of the goal, but Banks makes up for his error with a fantastic save down to his left.

Try as hard as they might Celtic cannot find the second  goal and pay the price in the dying minutes, when Kirkoswold break away and Celtic do not deal with the attack, a shot from the edge of the area goes into the corner of the goal. 1-1.

Celtic battle on for the win and going into injury time came the main talking point of the game. The ball is played down the left flank to Baker who beats Fearn and pulls the ball back from the bye line for Wronski to tap home. Amazingly with the ball in the back of the net the Kirkoswold linesman raises his flag for offside, claiming that Wronski was in an offside position in an earlier phase of play and the referee disallows a perfectly good goal.

Even after this major setback Celtic had the chance to win the game. Wronski is sent clear and with only Banks to beat tries to be too precise and puts the ball wide of the post.

Game over and the result is 1-1, although Celtic feel very hard done by due to what should have been the winning goal being disallowed, over the full 90 minutes a draw was probably a fair result.

Although disorganised in the first half, Celtic looked strong in the second , with Martindale having a good game at left back and Baker putting in a Man of the Match performance, working tirelessly and terrorising the Kirkoswold goal

23rd Aug

Kendal Celtic V Keswick Res

The first game of the season and due to other commitments manager Dave Noble could not   make the game so the reserve manager took over. As per the pre-season games Celtic started with Brewer and Baker up front as this had accounted for a number of goals, But could they continue the trend in the league. Celtic started well and played some nice football resulting in a number of early chances which Keswick did well to defend. Some of the best chances fell to Celtic at set plays and particularly corners, Steff had a fine header blocked on the line mid way through the first half. As the game went on more chances came and went with Celtic getting more frustrated.

A half time score of 0-0 was a good solid start and with the wind behind in the second half the outlook was good. Keswick had only 11 players so subs would be a key factor. Buzz made way at the break for Ganley who started on the right, A second sub soon followed as Dan Ash made way for Rob due to an injury which upset the balance of the team on the right hand side for a short time until the players found their touch. Keswick started to push on as Celtic got more and more frustrated with chance after chance going begging. Another change as Gary Cotton made way for  Matty and soon 3 sets of fresh legs started to tell. Ganley moved in from the right and got the ball right in centre of the pitch as the defenders backed off he smashed an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. A contender for goal of the season in the first game !!

Finally the pressure was off and Celtic pressed for the second which soon came as a ball was played into Brewer with his back to goal he turned the defender with fantastic skill and slotted the ball home. But no the Keswick linesman had his flag up !!!  The ref went over told him that he should get his eyes tested and the goal stood.

Any normal team would close up shop with only 10mins to go but not Celtic, A defender went on a forward run to try and get the third but lost the ball in midfield and the next thing you know Keswick are on the counter and hit the bar. Drama over full time and a well grafted 2-0 win
